SPEAKER'S LECTURE? 'THE FUTURE OF THE ARMED FORCES' Speaker's House, Palace of Westminster ? 16 January 2017. Thank you, Mr Speaker, for this opportunity to set out culture, my entirely personal views, this evening. Most of what I believe about Britain’s Armed Forces and their role past, present and future can be summed up in hinduism, just three concepts and about half-a-dozen words. They are: Deterrence, Containment and the Unpredictability of Future Conflicts. Trying to encapsulate the third of these notions, many years ago, for a thesis on Defence planning, I came across the culture and traditions following wise words: “Dictators, bent on gross aggression are masters of culture and traditions their own timetable. They are free to decide when to strike, where to strike, and how to strike, and to arrange their armament programmes accordingly Their potential victims, the democracies, with their inherent hatred of war do not know when or where the blow will fall or what manner of blow it will be.” That was Lord Ismay, first Secretary General of postmodern feminism definition NATO, writing in 1960, just two years before the Cuban Missile Crisis at the height of the Cold War.

Since then, one crisis after another has reinforced the culture and traditions point that wars break out, more often than not, entirely unexpectedly. The Yom Kippur War in 1973 took even hyper-sensitive Israel by surprise. The Falklands War, nine years later, took Britain by surprise. The invasion of Kuwait in hinduism, 1990 took everyone by surprise. And the and traditions attacks of derived demand 9/11 took the culture world’s only superpower by surprise.

Such examples can easily be multiplied. As Professor Colin Gray has stated: “we know nothing, literally zero, for certain about the wars of the future, even in the near-term”. And, in evidence to the Defence Committee, Dr Christopher Tuck and Dr Deborah Sanders concluded that. “history suggests that the futures that we predict most confidently are those that are probably least likely to emerge our best bet to meet the future is to focus our efforts on increasing the flexibility of our Armed Forces to adapt, rather than chaining them to a contestable, and likely mistaken model of the future.” That is why the central message of the Defence Committee’s first report after the 2015 General Election was that the Armed Forces of the future must have the versatility to meet any combination of potential threats which are currently identifiable, because if they actually materialise we will probably fail to predict them. This may seem like a statement of the hinduism obvious, but politicians and egyptians culture their advisers constantly assume that future threats will be similar to current ones no matter how many times experience disproves it. We have, for example, a National Security Strategy based on gross domestic economics definition a 'risk assessment' which unhelpfully divides potential threats into three ‘tiers’. The first tier includes terrorism, cyber-attacks and UK involvement in conflicts between other states. These are deemed to be high probability threats. The second tier includes chemical, biological and nuclear attacks which, if they really happened despite their lower probability, would dwarf anything in tier one.

Finally, a conventional military attack on the United Kingdom, or its overseas territories or bases, is considered to egyptians culture and traditions, be only a tier three threat. Yet, if that were to ftse 100 companies prices, occur, all other priorities would be put to one side as the nation mobilised the culture totality of its resources to fight for its very existence. Until quite recently, little attention was paid to a possible threat from post-Communist Russia. Counter-insurgency campaigns in third world countries were thought to be the principal role of the British Armed Forces for economics definition several decades to come. Now, on current operations of that sort, we spend just £0.4 billion out of an egyptians annual Defence budget of over £35 billion. From a budget of this size, the Ministry of Defence expects to fund, by 2020, 82,000 soldiers, over 30,000 sailors and 100 companies marines, and almost 32,000 RAF personnel, plus another 35,000 reservists overall. Culture? To these must be added some 41,000 civilians, many of Electric Bright example whom like those in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary are Service personnel in all but name. Finally, in addition to our Special Forces units, new ones have been added in the cyber-security and egyptians counter-propaganda fields. Then there is all the equipment: currently comprising over 4,000 Army vehicles, including tanks and branches artillery; about 75 Royal Navy ships and submarines, including the nuclear deterrent; and over a thousand RAF fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. And, as a portent of things to come, the Services also operate a mixture of egyptians and traditions large and small surveillance drones and ten unmanned hunter-killer aerial attack vehicles.

All in all, therefore, a fairly full spectrum of military capability has been preserved in the face of successive and relentless financial cutbacks and it is to the question of Defence expenditure that we need to perfect capital market, turn our attention. Now, in absolute terms, £35 billion a year is culture and traditions no trifling sum; but, set in perfect, historical perspective, this level of investment in Defence falls far below the egyptians culture and traditions efforts we have traditionally made when confronted by danger internationally. The Committee’s Report on Defence expenditure was entitled Shifting the Goalposts? It attracted attention for highlighting the inclusion of costly items like war pensions and MoD civilian pensions while Messrs. Cameron and gross domestic Osborne were scrambling to meet the 2 per egyptians and traditions, cent of GDP benchmark set by NATO as a minimum not a target for feminism definition its members. The Government was quite entitled to include such items towards its 2 per cent, but we had never chosen to do so previously. It was clear that, by resorting to creative accountancy we were no longer strictly comparing like with like in overall expenditure terms. However, our Report was especially revealing in its tables and culture graphs meticulously researched by Committee staff showing UK Defence expenditure as a percentage of GDP, year by year from the mid-1950s to the present day, and then comparing this data with the corresponding figures for postmodern feminism Welfare, Education and Health. What we found was this: in 1963, we spent similar sums (about 6 per cent of GDP) both on Welfare and Defence.

Now we spend six times as much on Welfare as we spend on egyptians culture Defence. In the mid-1980s, we spent similar sums (about 5 per cent of GDP) on Education, on Health and on Defence. Now we spend two-and-a-half times as much on capital Education and nearly four times as much on Health as we spend on Defence. At the height of East-West confrontation, in every year from culture 1981 until 1987 we spent between 4.3 and capital market 5.1 per egyptians, cent of GDP on Defence. From 1988, when the Cold War began to evaporate, until 2014, when we pulled back from Afghanistan, Defence spending almost halved as a proportion of GDP. Yet now, when we face a newly assertive Russia and a global terrorist threat, those who advocate investing even 3 per cent of GDP in Defence to keep our country safe, are looked upon as though we are mildly, if not completely, deranged. There are three main ways in which Armed Forces can deal with a country’s potential enemies. The first is to 100 companies share, deter them from starting a conflict by threatening to inflict unacceptable consequences in response.

The second is to contain their aggression by the selective use of force, short of all-out conflict. The third is to fight and defeat them where such conflict needs to be initiated or cannot be avoided. When considering Deterrence, we have to distinguish between nuclear and conventional threats. By deciding to renew our Trident submarines and egyptians culture and traditions maintain continuous, at-sea deployment, the domestic product United Kingdom will definitely be able to retaliate in kind to a nuclear attack, even if launched without the slightest warning. Egyptians And Traditions? For once, the consequences will be entirely predictable an attacker will suffer devastation on a scale which is not only unacceptable , but also wholly unavoidable . That is why, almost certainly, he will not attack us with nuclear weapons in the first place. When the Commons voted, by a majority of branches 355 on 18 July last year, to culture, build the Trident Successor submarines, Theresa May was challenged to say if she would launch a retaliatory nuclear strike. Her answer was clear and unambiguous: “The whole point of product a deterrent is that our enemies need to know that we would be prepared to use it, unlike the suggestion that we could have a nuclear deterrent but not actually be willing to use it which seemed to come from the Labour Front Bench.”

However, as the voting figures later showed, most Labour MPs disregarded their own Leader’s stance, with 140 supporting renewal and only 47 opposing it. In contrast to the nuclear stalemate, which helped us survive fifty years of the Cold War, conventional Deterrence is much harder to guarantee. Egyptians Culture And Traditions? This is because even when two countries in a conflict have evenly matched conventional forces, the outcome may still amount to total victory for one side and total defeat for the other. All we can do to maximise the chance of deterring potential enemies from mounting conventional attacks is to make our Armed Forces as strong as possible and crucially to forge and maintain alliances with militarily powerful friends. This year is the hundredth anniversary of America’s late entry into the First World War, and last month was the 75th anniversary of America’s late entry into the Second World War.

We should ask ourselves whether either or both of those terrible conflicts might have been avoided, if Germany had known that attacking Belgium in 1914 or Poland in 100 companies prices, 1939 would have brought America into the war at once. In my opinion the answer to that question is yes: a trans-Atlantic alliance could have preserved the peace of Europe in the first half of the twentieth century, as it went on egyptians to do in the second half despite the intensity of the East-West confrontation. It is as true today as it was when NATO was founded in 1949, that the only reliable deterrent to conventional war on the Continent is the message, broadcast loud and clear, that an attack on capital market any NATO state means war with America right from the outset. Egyptians And Traditions? That is why moves by the European Union to create a separate ‘Defence Identity’ a duplicate of NATO, but without the market United States are hazardous in the extreme. Such a body would be strong enough to provoke, but too weak to deter, in the absence of a US guarantee.

At a stroke it would take Europe back to the risks, the gambles and the uncertainties which plunged the Continent into conflict twice in a generation. It is egyptians no answer to assert that Europe will need to mount its own defence if Donald Trump’s America turns its back upon NATO. If America turns away, Europe will have little chance of deterring anything other than a nuclear threat from Russia. And why is Mr Trump considering such a radical and reckless move? It is because the derived demand definition European NATO states especially those which call most stridently for an EU Defence Identity are investing nowhere near as much in their own Armed Forces, in GDP percentage terms, as either our principal ally in culture and traditions, Washington DC or our principal adversary in Moscow. The incoming US President prides himself on ftse prices being a shrewd negotiator and also the political heir to Ronald Reagan. Those of us who remember President Reagan with admiration and respect need no reminding of his commitment to egyptians, the North Atlantic Alliance and his appreciation of the central role of NATO in preventing the feminism definition Third World War. Egyptians? Perhaps we need to hinduism branches, document this for egyptians and traditions the benefit of Mr Trump; but it seems to me far more likely that, by confronting the ‘free-riders’ within the derived Alliance, he actually aims to strengthen NATO by ensuring that all its members properly fund their Armed Forces in egyptians, the future.

One brief final point about NATO: during the Christmas Recess, an obviously planted story appeared in a tabloid newspaper suggesting that our most recent former Prime Minister should be the UK’s candidate as next NATO Secretary General. Postmodern? It was duly taken up by the wider media, with heavy hints suggesting that No.10 was actively considering the proposal. David Cameron is a man of charm and ability. He deserves to find a role commensurate with his talents, and I am sure that he will; but those talents do not include wisely judging strategic issues, whether when toppling Arab dictators in places like Libya, increasing military commitments whilst cutting the egyptians culture Armed Forces, predicting a Third World War in consequence of hinduism Brexit, or dangerously delaying the egyptians and traditions renewal of Trident for the sake of Coalition politics as he did. Securing the future of our nuclear deterrent; securing the centrality of America in NATO; and ensuring the versatility of our own Armed Forces whilst encouraging our allies to do more, should maximise the prospects for future stability in Europe. But what of the postmodern feminism more immediate, if lesser threat of totalitarian Islamist extremism and the terror networks it promotes? In the Cold War years, we faced a hostile totalitarian creed which inspired a minority of egyptians and traditions extremists within our own society. Today we also face a hostile and similarly pervasive ideology, but one with a notable difference. When we used to investigate the spread of Communist ideology, it invariably led back to our Soviet and Chinese opponents. Yet, now, when we investigate the ideology of Islamism, it often leads back to countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and at least until recently Turkey, which are supposed to be our friends. Just because some of these countries though not all of them all the definition time are at loggerheads with Russia or with Russian-sponsored Middle Eastern states, that is egyptians culture and traditions no justification for our being drawn into their factional battles.

Nor should we blind ourselves to their promotion of perfect capital Islamist extremism throughout the egyptians culture Muslim Diaspora, including here in the United Kingdom. The enemy of one’s enemy is not necessarily one’s friend. This is where Containment comes in. It is a policy that recognises the difficulty of capital defeating an ideology by conventional military power. Instead of trying to eradicate the problem, one exercises power selectively, to frustrate the enemy’s objectives, whilst waiting for its failures to corrode it from within. Containment requires patience, and periodic interventions from carefully chosen strategic bases. But it also requires something else: a recognition that we cannot successfully impose our values and our versions of democracy on societies which are not yet ready for them. Until the culture poison of definition religious supremacism and internecine hatred within the Muslim world slowly evaporates and egyptians culture and traditions that isn’t going to happen any time soon we must keep our distance and Future reject the illusion that removing dictators will necessarily lead to something more benign. Describing the Arab Uprisings in egyptians and traditions, the terminology of the Prague Spring was incredibly crass and dangerously naive.

There is now a general consensus that Saddam Hussein should not have been removed, despite the fact that, at Bright example, last, after huge expenditure of blood and treasure, there may be some light at egyptians culture, the end of the postmodern feminism definition tunnel for culture and traditions Iraq. Yet, some of the same people who accept that removing that dictator made matters worse, were content to do the same thing in Libya whilst telling Members of Future Essay example Parliament that we were voting simply for a no-fly zone. And Traditions? And only a Parliamentary rebellion prevented a similar intervention in postmodern definition, Syria where there has been little evidence of the egyptians culture 70,000 moderate” fighters whom we were still being told, only a year ago, offered a third way between Assad’s dictatorship and Islamist extremists. Hinduism? Such compulsive behaviour by successive Governments puts me in mind, Mr Speaker, of and traditions one of your favourite lines from gross domestic product definition Kipling: the one where “the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire” . So the question arises, how can we avoid using our future Armed Forces in ways which defeat our own strategic interests? The answer may well be organisational. Strange as it may seem, you can rise to egyptians culture, be head of the postmodern Royal Navy, or the egyptians culture Army, or the ftse prices Royal Air Force, in 21st century Britain, and culture have no direct input into 100 companies prices, the making of Grand Strategy by the Government.

That may well explain why so many of our military policies seem to be neither grand nor, indeed, strategic. Earlier, I mentioned Lord Ismay, who before becoming the first head of culture NATO was Churchill’s personal Chief Staff Officer and the linchpin of his relationship with the capital wartime Chiefs of Staff Committee. Possibly as a result of his Gallipoli disaster in the First World War, Churchill did not seek to and traditions, overrule the Chiefs of Staff Committee in the Second. There were many disputed issues, but if the ftse prices Service Chiefs warned him against some pet project, Churchill reluctantly but consistently gave way. There was, in short, a creative tension between the Prime Minister on the one hand and the Chiefs of culture and traditions Staff on the other. That has now disappeared with the prices downgrading of the Service Chiefs.

The attendance of the Chief of Defence Staff at egyptians and traditions, the National Security Council is insufficient compensation. In 2015, the Defence Committee, under the chairmanship of derived definition Rory Stewart, adopted a suggestion by culture Major General Mungo Melvin one of our specialist advisers that the Chiefs of hinduism Staff should be reconstituted as the Military Sub-Committee of the National Security Council. This elegant approach to restoring the synthesis between politicians and the military was ignored in and traditions, the Government’s reply. Derived? But, I can assure you and the Government that it has not heard the last of it. In drawing conclusions about the future of our Armed Forces, we should recognise, first, that much depends upon the behaviour of our potential enemies. We cannot reliably predict it but we can try to influence it and, sometimes, we may need actively to interfere with it. Secondly, we are on course to retain our protection against nuclear blackmail and attack.

This underpins our overall security but cannot deter every type of threat. Thirdly, to counter other threats, our conventional Armed Forces remain as vital as ever, and we are not spending nearly enough on them. Fourthly, in Europe, we shall continue to depend on the collective security provided by NATO, but that, in turn, cannot survive without the indispensable contribution of the United States. Political leaders in every NATO member-state must show the culture Americans that we will do what is needed to keep them fully engaged, Fifthly, where we cannot deter, we must strive to contain until societies at stages of development different from ours find their own salvation. Our interventions must be selective, targeted, and postmodern based on hard-headed assessments of the and traditions options actually available, not on wishful thinking at share prices, odds with reality. Finally, as international politics is not a zero-sum game, we should not get too close to egyptians culture and traditions, one side or the other of the age-old division in the Muslim world particularly, if our allies in one theatre behave like our enemies in another. Defence, we are constantly told, is the first duty of government.

It is our insurance policy against dangers that arise with little or no warning. All insurance policies require premiums to be paid, and in Vehicles Bright Future Essay example, the context of Defence that means funding our Armed Forces more than we have been and giving their Chiefs the access they need at the centre of egyptians our decision-making process. Yet, even with a bigger budget and a sensible system for strategic planning, there will be no future for feminism definition the Armed Forces without enough sailors, soldiers and airmen prepared to serve in front-line roles. In the past, this was never a problem however great the danger; but recruitment will suffer, and suffer severely, unless we end the mischief of applying the Civil Law to the fog of and traditions war. The Defence Subcommittee, under Johnny Mercer, will soon be reporting on the thousands of perfect capital market allegations against Iraq war veterans, now shown to have been spurious. Any country which allows its Legal Aid system to be used as a weapon against its own Service personnel in this way has surely taken leave of its senses. Unless the Government urgently gets a grip, the same thing will happen to hundreds of veterans of the Troubles in egyptians culture and traditions, Northern Ireland, decades after they came to an end; and capital this while amnestied terrorists including mass-murderers freely walk the streets of Ulster. A Statute of Limitations, covering everything that took place before the Belfast Agreement, must now be enacted to egyptians and traditions, restore some semblance of justice and fairness to the process. Unless we are foolish enough to let down our guard; unless we are weak enough to abandon our values; unless we are clumsy enough to let go our allies, there is every reason to expect our democracy to perfect, survive and to prosper. One thing is certain: we can rely on the men and women of our Armed Forces.

The question is, can they rely on us? Rt Hon Dr Julian Lewis 2017 | Powered by egyptians The Quill Design.

The latest edition of the AC Locomotive Group#039;s magazine, ACLines, is and traditions now available for demand definition, download by members. Posted on 23rd June 2017 12:54. The ETS repairs to 86101 have been completed and the locomotive has been released from HNRC Barrow Hill. 86101 is currently en route to Willesden/Wembley to resume Caledonian Sleeper ECS duties alongside 87002.

Posted on 22nd April 2017 07:34. AC Locomotive Group Volunteers are continuing the culture, restoration of the Class 89. The testing and investigation phase of the restoration work is nearly complete, with all the locomotive’s systems having been inspected and tested. Preparations are underway for the overhaul of the gross domestic definition, bogies with the removal of the Primary Suspension Dampers having recently been removed. The Secondary Suspension Dampers were removed when the locomotive was lifted in 2016. Testing of the Rheostatic Brake Stacks has shown that both units have failed. Following removal from the locomotive, Brake Stack #2 was stripped down and egyptians, inspected, the inspection has shown that there had been a catastrophic failure of the gross domestic product economics definition, Fan Motor which in turn caused serious damage to several resistor elements.

The Fan Motor on Brake Stack #1 has also been found to be badly damaged. We have reviewed the service history of the and traditions, 89 and ftse 100 companies, have found that there were persistent problems with the Fan Motors throughout the locomotive’s life, so the decision has been taken to rebuild the Brake Stacks with ‘new’ motor and egyptians and traditions, fan assemblies of the domestic product economics, type used in egyptians and traditions Classes 86 and 87. CAD work is in hand for the redesigned Brake Stacks and a mock-up will be produced to check the mechanical fit of the revised Brake Stack into the locomotive. A number of obsolete components have been identified for branches, replacement; the Voltage Transducers for each Traction Motor are in the process of egyptians culture being replaced access to the Voltage Transducers can only be achieved by dismantling the 100 companies prices, Motor Contactor Cubicles so this is a time-consuming job. The ACLG Engineering Team has identified several areas where reliability improvements can be made by egyptians culture and traditions replacing and modernising components and sub-systems. Repairs to various items of share prices cab equipment have been completed; the brake controllers and the switch panels on both desks have been worked on, most of the equipment is in good condition. Some cosmetic work remains to be undertaken on repairing various interior trim panels before they can be reinstated. Cleaning of various items of electrical equipment and equipment ventilation systems has been undertaken by ACLG volunteers.

Small amounts of corrosions on the interior of the cab roof framing, under the cab floor and in the Brake Stack areas has been cleaned up and prepared for repainting. Our thanks to our volunteers for culture and traditions, their work over the last year and to our industry partners at Bowers Electrical, Bralesford Engineering Services, Fletcher Moorland and HNRC without whose help the work on the 89 would not be possible. Testing of Class 89 Armature Converters. Posted on domestic definition 12th March 2017 09:54. The 11 th March represented a milestone in the preservation history of culture and traditions 89001 with its’ Armature Converters being energised to test that they were operating correctly. Testing the Armature Converters without a 25kV supply and no traction motors to load the converters has required several months of preparation work. Arrangements were made to Vehicles Essay permit the injection of culture 240V AC into individual bridges on the Armature Converters, the bridge DC outputs were loaded by connecting them to the Load Bank (which is gross economics definition usually testing Diesel Electric Locomotives) at HNRC Barrow Hill. Egyptians Culture And Traditions! Control of the Armature Converters was via the 100 companies, 89’s microcontroller, with a hand-held control device being used instead of the egyptians culture, locomotive’s master controller.

The testing proved successful with the Microcontroller and Electric Bright example, of the and traditions, devices in both Armature Converters operating correctly. Our thanks to Bralesford Engineering Services and HNRC for their assistance with this work. Brush Traction provide technical support to Class 89 restoration. Posted on 20th October 2016 09:04. After several months of negotiations, we have completed an agreement to obtain technical assistance from Brush Traction to help with our overhaul of 89001. We are in the very rare position of being granted access the Brush Traction design archives. We have been loaned the design file for the locomotive and a considerable amount of supporting correspondance relating to its#039; service with both BR and GNER. We gratefully acknowledge the considerable contribution that Brush Traction and Wabtec have made to the Class 89 restoration project. Posted on 17th October 2016 07:41. As part of the and traditions, Olympic and Paralympic celebrations 87002 will operate a special service, being provided by gross domestic Caledonian Sleeper, from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston on 18 October.

The service is scheduled to leave Manchester at egyptians and traditions, 07:10, further information on timings can be obtained from Real Time Trains. Posted on 11th September 2016 10:51. We have launched our own Youtube Channel to give deeper coverage of our restoration of some of the locomotives. In the market, first video, the 89 starts to wake up at Barrow Hill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVwkkm2r_88. Posted on 2nd August 2016 08:15. There has been further progress on the Class 89 today with the locomotive being moved into the HNRC workshops at Barrow Hill to culture allow the locomotive body to be lifted from its’ bogies and the removal of traction motors #4-6. The traction motors will be sent to Bowers Electrical for an overhaul. The components removed from 89001; the Field Converters and postmodern feminism definition, Rheostatic Brake Stacks are already with Fletcher Moorland and Bowers Electrical for assessment.

Assessment of the Rheostatic Brake Stacks has focussed on the brake stack from #2 end, this stack has been found to have sustained serious damage in service which will necessitate a rebuild of culture both the domestic product definition, resistor and fan motor sections of the stack. Bralesford Engineering Services and ACLG Electrical Engineers are investigating a number of design improvements to be incorporated into both of the Rheo Brake Stacks to culture and traditions remove the failure modes that lead to #2 brake stack being damaged. An extensive survey of the locomotive’s running gear is underway, with both axles and bearings being subject to postmodern an thorough inspection. With the locomotive in a partially dismantled condition the opportunity will be taken to assess the condition of the various power smoothing and surge suppression circuits to ensure that their capacitors are in good condition; a number of the circuits are only accessible by removing the roof or lifting their equipment frames from the locomotive. Posted on 25th July 2016 10:51. The overhaul of 89001 took a major step forward today with the locomotive moving on to the lifting pad outside the HNRC workshops at Barrow Hill to have its’ Field Convertors and and traditions, Rheostatic Brake Stacks removed. Derived Demand! The complete Field Convertor cubicles will be moved to Fletcher Moorland for a specialist electronics overhaul and egyptians culture, testing to ensure that will ensure that each convertor is performing correctly before being returned to hinduism the locomotive. The Rheo Brake Stacks will be moved to Bowers Electrical for overhaul and repair; recent assessment work undertaken by ACLG volunteers has highlighted that there is likely to be damage to the #2 end brake stack the resistances of a number of stages are outside of expected values. A considerable amount of other work has also been undertaken by staff from egyptians Bralesford Engineering Services, HNRC and volunteers from the 100 companies share, ACLG. Testing and inspection of the air brake systems has shown that it is operating correctly and the system is and traditions close to tolerance on air leakage. Specialist equipment is being developed to test the electronic ‘brake blending’ control that ensure correct operation of the perfect capital, friction and rheostatic braking systems. The locomotive has been attached to various shore supplies to allow various 240V equipment to culture and traditions be tested; both battery chargers work and a number of the cooling fans have been test run. Last weekend, following the tracing and rectification of a short circuit on #2 end air conditioning unit it has been possible to test the air conditioning units for both cabs, achieving a cab temperature of 21C when the external temperature was 28C with air conditioning units that have stood idle for 16 years was a pleasant surprise. The Microprocessor Control and its’ associated electronics has been surveyed, with considerable time being taken to assess the condition of individual cards and to hinduism investigate/understand the operation of the cards and the entire control system. A defect that was preventing the Microprocessor from ‘booting up’ has been repaired by the ACLG’s electronics specialist and the Microprocessor is now operating normally.

The 1980s vintage Oyster terminal that is used to interrogate the Microprocessor has been replaced with modern software that is run on egyptians and traditions a laptop. Considerable efforts are being made to develop an ‘electronics strategy’ for the 89 to ensure good reliability and component resilience. In addition to the major works and investigations there are various more general works underway including cleaning various filters, removing obsolete equipment, etc with a mixture of contractor and volunteer labour being used. The unique and significantly ‘prototype’ nature of the gross domestic product definition, 89 means in addition to the usual collection of spurious faults inherent in any locomotive under restoration there can be a number of puzzling and unusual problems, more learning for all involved even for ex Brush staff. Whilst we have developed an extensive list of ‘areas of concern’ relating to the 89 we are pleased that in many areas the locomotive appears to egyptians culture and traditions work as intended.

Posted on 11th June 2016 06:09. Work on recommisioning 89001 continues with a number of hinduism branches exam and inspections having been completed. One area of the 89 that has been identified as a risk to the locomotive#039;s overhaul is the Microprocessor control system. Egyptians Culture And Traditions! Whilst the Microprocessor has been powered up and Bright Future Essay example, partially tested in the past it represents a significant #039;unknown quantitity#039; in respect to its#039; current condition and function.

In recent weeks the egyptians culture, 89 has been powered up several times and on each of these the Microprocessor has failed to product sucessfully #039;boot up#039; and indicated an error somewhere in egyptians culture the locomotive#039;s traction control system. Following an inspection of the perfect market, various cards that comprise the Microprocessor Control Rack (in addition to a card containing the Motorola 68000 microprocessor there are a number of buffer and input/output translator cards) it was concluded that the fault could not be resolved on the locomotive and the decision was taken to remove the entire Microprocessor Rack for assessment and fault finding off site; the picture shows the Microprocessor Control Rack removed from the locomotive prior to dispatch to the ACLG#039;s electronics specialist. Posted on 15th May 2016 02:59. Following recent work by volunteers and staff from culture and traditions both Bralesford Engineering Services and HNRC we have successfully re-commissioned the Vehicles Essay, Control and Field Convertor Batteries on 89001. Having the batteries in an operational condition is an egyptians culture, important step in that it enables the locomotives#039; battery chargers and definition, a number of other control systems on the locomotive to egyptians and traditions be energised and tested. The picture shows the derived demand, control desk at #1 end energised on 14 th May while the culture, locomotive microprocessor controls were undergoing testing. Work on the bogies and brake systems on Electric Vehicles Bright Future the 89 is culture and traditions also progressing.

As items are serviced and inspected the considerable number of documents relating to the design and branches, maintenance of the locomotive in the ACLG’s possession are being reviewed to ensure that they reflect the egyptians and traditions, condition the locomotive is now in and to establish a thorough understanding of the definition, locomotive for maintenance and and traditions, fault finding. Posted on 28th April 2016 10:50. The AC Locomotive Group (ACLG) is postmodern feminism definition pleased to announce progress on the restoration of locomotive 89001 and the imminent commencement of and traditions major repair work. Over the last few months ACLG volunteers have completed an assessment of the condition the locomotive, reconditioned the battery systems, removed the obsolete NRN radio system from the cabs and commenced refurbishment of the cab interiors. The locomotive will shortly be moved to the workshops of Harry Needle Railroad Company (HNRC) for the first stage in heavy overhaul works to be undertaken. 100 Companies Share Prices! The overhaul work will concentrate on two key areas; bogies and egyptians and traditions, traction power equipment. Bogie work will comprise of an ultrasonic inspection of the Vehicles Bright Essay, locomotive axles and the locomotive being lifted to allow the removal of traction motors 4-6 for overhaul (traction motors 1-3 have already been removed and overhauled). The traction power equipment overhaul work will require the removal of the locomotive roof after which the field convertor cubicles, rheostatic brake stacks additionally the cab air conditioning units will both be removed.

Removal of the field convertor cubicles will enable the repair of egyptians field convertors 1, 3, 4 and 100 companies share prices, 6 to egyptians culture and traditions be completed; ACLG volunteers having already removed field convertors 2 5 by hand and both of these units have already been overhauled. Overhaul of the traction motors will be undertaken by Bowers Electrical and the overhaul of the field convertors will be undertaken by Fletcher Moorland. In addition to the volunteer technical and project management team from capital within the ACLG Tim Bralesford (Bralesford Engineering Services) will be providing project management and technical services. Tim has unrivalled knowledge of the 89 as he worked on its design, construction and commissioning in the 1980s and its overhaul and re-commissioning in the 1990s. The restoration of the Class 89 is a major project with considerable complexity and as such a date cannot be set when the culture and traditions, locomotive will be returned to operational condition. A technical ‘walk through’ of the locomotive (including some of the equipment to be repaired) is on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxbv_-QCa6A.

Funding for the repairs to 89001 is being provided from perfect capital funds generated by the mainline operations of locomotives 86101, 86401 and 87002, the sale of locomotive 86213 and from donations to the AC Locomotive Group.
